At Ultimate Automotive car shop in Ottawa we understand the importance of keeping your vehicles in the best condition possible. That means safety for you as the driver, your passengers, and other people with whom you share the roadways. There are some simple tasks that will keep your car or truck in the best condition possible.
Check your tires frequently. First, look at them to be sure there is sufficient tread to drive and stop safely. When the tread is worn, the tires will slide rather than grip the road and that can cause problems. You should also periodically check the tire pressure. Through weather changes, long periods of sitting idle, and general usage, tires will lose the air pressure. Check the PSI (pounds per square inch) or have your service station help you. You will probably notice how much more smoothly and easily your car handles with properly inflated tires. You should also rotate the tires every 5,000 to 10,000 miles to ensure that they will wear evenly and won’t need replacement as soon.
Check the oil level at least once per month. Change the oil as indicated in the owner’s manual. Keeping the vehicle lubricated with clean oil is vital to its continued smooth operation. Understand what is the best type of oil to use in your car, whether you change it yourself or have it done, is important.
There are other fluids that should also be checked periodically that includes the coolant (antifreeze), and fluids for power steering, brake and transmission. A leak in any of these items can cause your car to mis-perform and can actually be dangerous in some situations.
Test the headlights, brake lights, backup lights, and turn signal indicators. You may need someone to help with this. If a light is burned out, it is probably just the bulb but it may also be a fuse that needs replacing. Also clean your headlights and taillight so that other vehicles can see you clearly. It only takes a few minutes and some window cleaner.
Windshield wipers can become damaged or worn. If they do not clear the window, you could have real problems with visibility in rain and snow.
Brake pads are another item that should be checked, especially if you notice some noise or feel the brake pedal vibrating. This is not an item you can defer.
Schedule regular check ups for your car. This will include checking and changing the air filter when necessary to keep your vehicle’s engine running efficiently. It also means carefully inspecting all the belts and hoses. If the “check engine” light comes on, take your car to a technician who can use electronic diagnostic tools to find the problem and suggest solutions.
All of this work can be accomplished at Ultimate Automotive. In fact, we have lots of other maintenance tips that you should be aware of. Our goal is for only safe vehicles to be on the roads for the safety of the drivers, passengers, and others.
